Abstract: This paper delves into the impact of media perceptions, both positive and negative, on the performance of professional athletes of color, with a focus on black athletes. Drawing on a range of psychological studies and scholarly research, the paper examines how biased representations in the media, including negative stereotyping and positive stereotyping, contribute to heightened pressure, anxiety, and self-doubt among black athletes. It explores the concept of stereotype
threat and its effects on athletic performance, as well as the influence of social media feedback on athletes' self-esteem and motivation. Through an analysis of various studies and scholarly perspectives, the paper highlights the complex interplay between media perceptions and athlete performance, shedding light on the detrimental effects of both negative and positive stereotyping in the sporting realm. Ultimately, it underscores the need for greater awareness and critical engagement with media portrayals of athletes of color to mitigate the adverse impacts on their mental health and performance.
